Yeah, sorry, but let’s be honest many anti-colonial forces were in fact terrorists and once they seized power behaved just like the former imperialists. They purged, killed, and tortured innocent people.
"Fighting" imperialism does not make you the good guy. The National Liberation Front in Algeria is a prime example of this, and those junta and militias operating under Marxism in Latin America do as well.
Abdul Nasser was responsible for the torture of many political prisoners.
But I guess if you “resist” the West you get a free pass on any atrocity committed.
Liberal rag Mother Jones advocates “living wage” yet encourages own employees to go on food stamps
Today, the top story over at the liberal Mother Jones website is al about how fast food restaurants are evil corporations who don’t pay their employees a “livable wage.” It’s a bit ironic, however, considering that some Mother Jones employees are so poorly paid that the magazine actually encourages them to go on food stamps.
The fellowship offered by Mother Jones isn’t an entry-level menial gig—“No coffee or laundry errands here!” says the magazine—but the compensation could fool you: “Fellows receive a $1,000 monthly stipend.” Assuming a 40-hour workweek (many journalists work much longer hours than that), that means a fellow at Mother Jones earns less than $6 an hour in a state, California, that just decided to raise the minimum wage to $10. In San Francisco, where the magazine is based, $1,000 a month isn’t enough to pay for both food and shelter.
One former MJ intern who spoke to me on the condition of anonymity told me they “slept on an air mattress for six months while I worked there because I couldn’t afford a real one.” Another former intern said, “During our first meeting with HR at Mother Jones, we were advised to sign up for food stamps.”
Let me be clear, I don’t care what Mother Jones pays their “fellows” or their interns. Heck, I don’t care if they pay if they pay their interns at all. If some enterprising young people want the opportunity to work at a major magazine and would be willing to do so for $6/hour, more power to them. The minimum wage is a job killing, big government policy, and employers and employees should be able to negotiate whatever salary they can agree on without the government interfering.
Multiple studies have shown that people are more likely to get a job if they work for free first and that minimum wage laws increase joblessness. The minimum wage only inhibits individuals from finding jobs and working their way up the ladder by placing the first rung of the ladder where it’s often out of reach.
What does bother me about Mother Jones is their rank hypocrisy! If you search “living wage” on Mother Jones you’ll find dozens of articles criticizing fast food companies, Wal-Mart, and other employers for not paying their employees a high enough wage. You can even find articles advocating paying interns a decent wage. Yet, Mother Jones sees fit to have their own “fellows” sleeping on air mattresses and living on the government dole.
That’s the liberal media for you: do as I say, not as I do. Apparently what’s good enough to slap on the front page of Mother Jones isn’t good enough to actually implement for their own employees.
